Midwest Cornbread Dressing is a savory, comforting dish made with crumbled cornbread, white bread, sautéed vegetables, and a blend of fragrant seasonings. Baked until golden and crispy, this classic dish is perfect for holidays, family gatherings, and cozy dinners. Easy to make and full of flavor, it’s a Midwestern favorite that brings warmth and tradition to your table.
Prepare the Bread: Crumble 6 cups of cornbread and 4 cups of light bread into small pieces. Set aside.
Sauté Vegetables: In a skillet, sauté 1 cup chopped celery, ½ cup chopped bell pepper, and ½ cup chopped onion until soft and fragrant (about 5-7 minutes).
Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the crumbled breads, sautéed vegetables, 3 chopped hard-boiled eggs, and all seasonings (poultry seasoning, sage, thyme, celery salt, salt, and pepper). Mix thoroughly.
Add Broth: Slowly pour in 2½ cups of chicken or turkey broth. Stir well until the bread mixture is moist but not soggy. Add more broth if needed.
Bake: Transfer to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45-50 minutes, or until golden and crispy on top.
Serve: Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy as a side with turkey, chicken, or roasted vegetables!
