Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Airtight container

Ingredients

  • 1 packet powdered cheese mix from a box of mac and cheese
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 ½ cups mayonnaise
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika
  • ¾ teaspoon granulated sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon cumin
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¾ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¾ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce

Instructions

  • Start with the Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of water and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Add the powdered cheese mix from the mac and cheese box. Whisk it all together until you get a smooth paste. This will help the cheese blend perfectly with the rest of the ingredients.
  • Add the Spices: Now, it’s time to add the flavor! Stir in the cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, cumin, granulated sugar, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Don’t forget the hot sauce! It’s what gives the Lava Sauce that signature fiery kick.
  • Cream it Up: Gradually fold in 1 ½ cups of mayonnaise, mixing it until everything is well combined. You should end up with a creamy, smooth sauce that’s perfectly seasoned.
  • Chill and Serve: Transfer your Lava Sauce to an airtight container and refrigerate it for at least 1 hour. This helps the flavors meld together for that authentic, irresistible taste.

Notes

  • Adjust the Spice: If you prefer a milder sauce, reduce the cayenne pepper or hot sauce. For extra heat, add more cayenne or a spicier hot sauce.
  • Consistency: If the sauce is too thick, add a little water or vinegar to thin it out. If it’s too runny, add more mayo or cheese powder.
  • Storage: Store the sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Stir before using as it may thicken over time.
  • Vegan Option: Substitute the mayonnaise with a plant-based mayo for a vegan version of Lava Sauce.
